An estimated 40% of Pakistani households do not have access to basic modern energy services like electricity.  Traditionally, these villages rely heavily on biomass fuels such as firewood, dung and crop residues, and kerosene to meet their everyday energy needs. Women and children often spend 8 hours a day collecting these energy sources, which are expensive, dirty, and dangerous. In addition to being very expensive and highly inefficient, these fuel sources contributes to deforestation and lead to severe health problems.  In fact, over 3 million people die each year of biomass related illnesses.

EcoEnergyFinance (EEF) was established to provide clean and efficient energy solutions to the rural poor in Pakistan.  EEF works directly with Pakistanis in rural villages to install solar lighting systems in their homes.  By providing solar energy, locals would no longer need to spend their day in search of energy sources, and could otherwise create income-generating activities to enhance their quality of life.

Our goals:

  • Displace kerosene.  Kerosene is a very expensive fuel source and can often take hours for people in remote areas to obtain.  It is extremely dangerous and responsible for hundreds of burn related deaths as well as severe respiratory problems.
  • Create economic opportunities.  Time saved not searching for fuel sources can alternatively be used towards income generation and educational opportunities.  Solar energy will extend the work hour beyond daylight and create opportunities for solar based entrepreneurship (e.g. computes stations, cell phone business, solar powered water pumps, etc).
  • Proved clean energy.  The energy poor base their economic growth on dirty energy sources.  This ignores health concerns, ties development to volatile imports, and hampers international efforts to slow global warming.

EEF is currently working in the Interior Sindh Province of Pakistan.  This includes some of the most poverty inflicted areas of Pakistan.  This year EEF will light up the households of 2 villages in Jamshoro- Sodo Palari and Dolo Jokhio.  Providing solar energy to this region will enable locals to triple their work house to develop handicrafts, allow their children light for study, and scare away wild animals that threaten their security at night.

Ultimately, we hope to light 10,000 villages along the coastline and beyond.

Newsflash

PAKISTAN FLOOD RELIEF- In an effort to provide immediate relief to the flood victims, EEF is purchasing solar lanterns from Greenlight Planet to be distributed by our partners in Pakistan to the regions affected by the flood.  Solar lanterns are crucial for disaster relief simply because they provide light for rescue shelters, health clinics for treating children with malaria and cholera, and search and rescue missions.  These lanterns are portable, waterproof, and provide 16 hours of light after a 4 hour solar charge, making them ideal for disaster relief.   The cost of each lantern is $12.
