PILOT PROJECT VILLAGES

EcoEnergyFinance was scheduled to implement its pilot project this fall and light the villages of Dolo Jokhio and Sodo Palari, located outside of Karachi in the Jamshoro District. Unfortunately, due to the floods these villages have been submerged and its residents are now living in rescue shelters.  In an effort to provide immediate relief to the survivors of the flood we are raising funds to provide portable solar lanterns for use in the shelters, hospitals, and other relief-related missions.  Once the flood waters recede,  EEF will continue its work to provide permanent solar home systems as part of the rehabilitation and development of these villages, in addition to reaching other areas in rural Pakistan.

Dolo Jokio and Sodo Palari

Despite their proximity to the bustling urban metropolis of Karachi, the people here subsist with little or no access to clean drinking water, proper sanitation, electricity, telephone, transport, gas, healthcare, or education. In an ironic twist of fate, the power plant which supplies Karachi with electricity is located nearby, with power lines crossing directly over these villages. These villages are neglected because they are considered too poor to pay, and to powerless to matter. Nearly 3 million people exist on fishing as their main source of income, which is difficult in the off season.

By providing solar power to each village, the lives of these rural dwellers can be vastly improved.  Solar power will displace kerosene and improve the respiratory health of the community and eliminate the hundreds of kerosene-related deaths that occur regularly.  It will bring energy related economic opportunities for entrepreneurs, along with an extended work day and time recouped by not having to search for fuel sources.  In addition, solar power will enable communities to learn about clean energy, environmental degradation in the coastal areas, and its implications for their livelihood as fishermen.

Newsflash

PAKISTAN FLOOD RELIEF- In an effort to provide immediate relief to the flood victims, EEF is purchasing solar lanterns from Greenlight Planet to be distributed by our partners in Pakistan to the regions affected by the flood.  Solar lanterns are crucial for disaster relief simply because they provide light for rescue shelters, health clinics for treating children with malaria and cholera, and search and rescue missions.  These lanterns are portable, waterproof, and provide 16 hours of light after a 4 hour solar charge, making them ideal for disaster relief.   The cost of each lantern is $12.
